Listening to the climate stories was an overwhelming experience. I could hear the reverence for the land coupled with the concern for the rapidly changing climate conditions of the Adirondacks. Even in the span of a single lifetime, people have been witnessing warmer seasons, the presence of different wildlife, and fluctuating weather conditions. Indigenous people have been warning us of all of this since the 1960s, but no has taken this seriously enough. In Fire Escape, I address both this fear of the warming climate and the insidious effect that global warming is having on our planet. The setting in the Adirondack park connected me to these stories in a visceral way. The staggering beauty of this place can only be preserved if we all care enough to speak out and change our habits before it’s too late.
