With the poem I also made simple hand-written notes to each of my fellow artists of the 2024 ADK climate stories retreat. This is because, while created for the collective ADK project, the poem also documented the time that we spent together through the 5-day retreat. For each of the artists, I picked out lines from the poem that’re specific to a shared conversation, sight, or experience whose references I think the artists, respectively, would know or wink at. This, I realize, is very much in line with the writing practices of classical Chinese poetry. In this tradition, poetry was often written like letters to friends, families, life with—or more oftener without them, their horse, garden, etc.—letters that one could or could not in reality send through mail.
