Artist Statement
Upon listening to several Adirondack Climate Stories that addressed residents’ concern with an increasing tick population and hike in Lyme disease cases, The Adirondack Uptick book was born. Measuring 90 inches long when open (a nod to the correlation of a lower annual ADK snowfall that lends to a tick boom as they survive the winter on rodents and deer), this book is a visual representation and reminder of the presence of a growing and spreading bacteria born illness. Though small and easily over looked, an imbedded tick carrying Borrelia bacteria can cause a life long mountainous list of difficult symptoms if left untreated. As tick marks and tallies grow, as data is gathered, as research is conducted, we should still remain hopeful and enjoy and respect the beautiful lands around us, that are home to more than we know. The Adirondack Uptick is dedicated to my brothers and my boss, all diagnosed with Lyme disease.
